Planet Verge's All-Female Team Conquers Another Medium: Internet TV

On the Verge Brings Viewers What’s Hot & What’s Important

The girls of Planet Verge have teamed up with digital network ambush.tv to produce On The Verge, the Internet TV show that is one-part band interviews, one-part scene and one-part philanthropy. It’s “What’s Hot and What’s Important”, but most of all, it’s what the On the Verge hosts live and breathe. Producers/Hosts Joelle Caputa, Jordana Reim and Jess Sager bring viewers backstage for OTV-exclusive acoustic shows, to the red carpet, the runway and… the farm (watch and see!). The girls are playful and conscientious, some straightedge, some vegan, and all living it up with regular doses of rock n’ roll.

Planet Verge and ambush.tv began production for On the Verge in October 2008 and are proud to announce the debut of episodes online at www.planetverge.com. Episodes are filmed on location as well as at the ambush.tv studios in Hoboken, New Jersey.

This week’s episodes feature acclaimed art pop-rock band the Matches. The band debuted two unreleased songs exclusively for On the Verge at an acoustic performance backstage at Ace of Clubs in New York City. The Matches headlined an On the Verge-sponsored show at the venue that night, so stay tuned for more live footage and backstage exclusives with the band.

On The Verge’s “SCENE OUT LOUD” segments feature interviews and performances (sometimes OTV-exclusives) with must-hear musicians from the USA and abroad. Some you already know and love, others we’ll introduce to your playlist.

The Next DJ AM -- DJ MILES

We all are familiar with the one and only DJ AM, but who will be the next big time DJ to hit the scene? With varieties of music tracks being spun at clubs, parties, and on the radio these days, wouldn’t one want to know who the performer behind this music is? DJ Miles is not just your ordinary DJ. This disk jockey lives a double life as a student by day, and DJ by night.

Growing up in a musically influenced home, his dad first introduced him to the music business as his father played in the band, The Sound Company. Miles is proud to have grown up with music starting at a young age as he comments “It’s in my blood.” DJ Miles started by assisting his father at bar mitzvahs and weddings, which has now led to spinning at the hottest events in Los Angeles and Orange County. He is now able to score supreme jobs such as performing on a regular basis at local Southern California clubs such as Hollywood’s Les Deux, as well as playing with notable artists like E-40, DJ Felli Fel, Kaba Modern from MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew, and several others.

This nineteen year old DJ’s career has just kicked into gear, yet many opportunities are set for him in the future. DJ Miles has realized that starting from the bottom with bar mitzvahs every weekend has truly helped him out as it has given him a solid foundation with knowing when to play the right song at the right time. As DJ Miles puts it, “DJs play incredible songs, they have good ears for good music, but it is about playing those songs at the right time. You can get people to a certain point and play whatever you want, but you gotta take passion in the song.” It is apparent that Miles has a definite advantage over other DJs. Besides being able to play the right song at the right time unlike other DJs, Miles has strongly shown that passion is the number one factor. He is keen about the emotion he puts into his music as he says, “I get a feeling in my heart where I could just play anything I want and people will just love it. I can feel so much emotion in my music, it’s incredible. The thing about some guys is that there is not any emotion involved in it. For me, there’s so much emotion involved in it and it makes a difference and people can see that.” His energy clearly glowed in the interview as he couldn’t stop talking about his love for his job. There are tons of performers who share their music with the world, but there are only a few who have a radiant spirit that no one can stop, and DJ Miles has surely proven to be one of the few.

Speaking with Miles, his passion for music was unquestionable as he profoundly expressed his zeal by saying, “I know I said passion a thousand times but music is a passion, not a job. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. This is what I love to do, I love it, I can’t even explain it.”

Burn Halo Stole the Show (And not just cause the opening act sucked and we didn't stay for the headliners...)

The moment of truth...

What's it like to see James Hart fronting a band that's not Eighteen Visions?

As I found out a few weeks ago, quite enjoyable!

Burn Halo songs have instant radio appeal baked into each scrumptious tune. Mainstream music fans will--pardon the pun-- eat them up. The band's debut album is good, but I have to say the live set puts the recording to shame. I actually prefer the demo of "Dirty Little Girl" (the favorite of mine and I'm sure a million others) to the version that made the final cut. And of course, the live version was the highlight of the night.

There didn't seem to be any Eighteen Visions fans in the crowd. I would have been able to tell. They would have been the cool people. Everyone in attendance at this show was a bit weird. The kind of people who wear the t-shirt of the band they're there to see at the show. And apparently also the kind who go out in public wearing nothing but bras, pleather underwear and boots up to their crotches. But I blame that on the fact that this was Snocore and Static-X was headlining.

The point I was trying to make, however, is that the original hardcore Eighteen Visions fans are most likely NOT going to be at these shows. Those who jumped on the bandwagon for their final album, which was much more melodic and mainstream friendly, may have carried over. But unfortunately, as usual, the major label 18V was on never did them justice and rarely seemed to make them a priority. So those fans never had a chance to get a head start on the Burn Halo train.

It was great to see that Hart hasn't lost his edge. He's a captivating frontman and I look forward to seeing another show.

One thing I have to say, however, is that the other guys in the band scream "LA rock." There is totally a different breed of rock musician out there on the west coast. I wish the other band members didn't try so hard to look like they just came back from hanging out with Avenged Sevenfold. That's when I shed a few tears in remembrance of Eighteen Visions. They eluded their own brand of cool.

Expect to hear lots more about Burn Halo this year. They've got the total easy to market package and unlike some of their peers- talent.

Slumdog Thousand-aire

Since it is entirely possible that you’ve been living under a rock for the past six or seven months, here’s a recap – Obama won (yep, the black guy), everyone hates rich people, and the Oscar’s were swept by a little movie called Slumdog Millionaire.

Ok, so now that we’re all caught up, let’s talk about this movie. Slumdog Millionaire is the story of a scrappy kid growing up in (no spoiler here) the slums. These slums happen to be in India, making Slumdog arguably the most successful movie - in American markets - with India starring front and center. The implausible love story and game show tension are not really the main attractions. (Really, did anyone not see the Three Musketeers question coming?)

What made the movie unique was the frank depiction of Indian poverty and the stark contrast between the country’s wealthy and poor. For Americans watching from the safety of a multiplex, the plight of the impoverished in India is astounding and probably helped propel the movie to Oscar and box-office glory.

The film has been criticized by some for glossing up the slums a bit too much. (As one Indian friend put it “go to those slums. You’re not going to find Freida Pinto.”) And, yes, there have been more realistic films made illustrating these this poverty. But the fact of the matter is that this is the first Indian-centric film to achieve significant critical and audience success in America, and it shows a small, if less than realistic, shot of the hardships endured by too many every day.

20% of all children who die before age 5 do so in India. And in the five minutes you’ve spent reading this, an Indian woman has died, as one dies every 5 minutes. There is a severe need for improved healthcare and last week, the New York Young Professionals Chapter of the American India Foundation (AIF) hosted their second annual benefit dinner to raise money in an attempt to make an impact on this appalling situation. Raising money for the Apna Clinic, a public health initiative, the Young Professionals will help fund a center to serve 50,000 – 60,000 migrant workers and their families in Mustafabad. The clinic will provide basic screenings and education as well as reproductive and women’s care.

Saturday night is not generally when most people want to hang out and discuss issues of poverty, but the 200+ people who showed up to Vermillion on Manhattan’s east side were happy to use their weekend to try and help. And the many volunteers who spent weeks planning the event were thrilled that such an enthusiastic crowd gathered for this cause. An undeniable success, the event raised over $14,000 for the Apna Clinic. Not quite 20 million rupees, but an impressive effort nonetheless! [Ed note: suddenly thinking we should get one of these volunteers on a game show...]

Whether people are drawn to Indian causes because of a popular film, family connections, or other interests, there is a real and growing need for change in the country. If a mildly cheesy Bollywood type film helps raise awareness among people who can help, then it can be as glossy as it wants to be.

Rock 'n Recession

For anyone who hasn’t heard, several 90s bands are headlining reunion tours this summer, including Blink 182, Limp Bizkit and Jane’s Addiction in a summer of nostalgia. Blink arguably hit the height of their popularity with 1999’s Enema of the State, which was pretty much the soundtrack for my senior year of high school. Thanks, Blink. While Limp Bizkit inexplicably put out albums well into the 2000s, the band peaked in 1999 with Significant Other. Jane’s Addition suffered a tumultuous relationship throughout the 90s and as a result, sprinkled the decade with their alt-rock tunes.

The new wave of 90s influence led the COO of Nederlander Concerts to tell Rolling Stone “[i]t’s a great time to be in a Nineties band” (Issue 1075, pg 24). RS cites the successful tours of other 90s acts Stone Temple Pilots and My Bloody Valentine in 2008 as evidence that the market for the 10 to 15 year-old music is growing and the audience is primed for all of these tours in the coming months. The magazine also uses a market researcher to argue that the original fanbase “Generation X’ers now have a lot of discretionary income… and now they’re starting to focus on themselves.”

Happy as I am that my high-school years are coming back into vogue, I have my doubts about how well these tours will be received. First, the expectation that Generation X is going to carry these tours shows a misunderstanding of where the original fans came from. In 1999, Generation X (traditionally defined as the kids born from 1965 to 1979) ranged in age from 20 to 34 years old. I’m going to go on a limb and say that there weren’t a lot of mid-30 year olds moshing to Fred Durst and his “Nookie.” The next generation up on the other hand, Gen Y, was turning 11 and 19 and still had access to their parents’ generosity during a huge economic boom in the US. The lines of minivans waiting outside these concerts where parents waited to pick up their high schoolers were epic.

Irritating as I find this generation fallacy, the argument that previous bands’ successes and “discretionary income” will propel these bands to tour stardom is most questionable. As you may have noticed, 2009 is not 2008. The ability of STP to earn impressive ticket sales in 2008 may or may not be indicative of their peers’ potential to do the same one year and one massive recession later. STP tickets went on sale when the recession was a whisper among economists and cable news. Spending was stable and unemployment growing, but slowly and predictably.

Compare this to today’s economy that has shed over 600,000 jobs each month for the last three months, with no end in sight. Unemployment has hit 8.1% and the core audience (25-34 year olds) is even worse with unemployment at 8.7%. This time last year the figures were 4.8% and 4.9%, respectively. “Discretionary income” isn’t really a consideration for the unemployed. Even for those who still have an income have become less eager to spend it. Adjusted for inflation, February’s consumer spending was up down 0.2% from January.

For those who don’t enjoy economic data as much as I do, put it this way: sh*t’s gone bad. The fear in the consumer is palpable in numbers and just walking past any given storefront. The “Going Out of Business Sale” and “75% Discount” signs are ubiquitous in Manhattan and around the country. “Retail Space for Lease” signs are also multiplying by the day as business clear out of their pricey Midtown locations. This is not a good time to try and sell anything, including $60 tickets to a band fans saw a decade ago.

This recession is compared to the Great Depression and the big hit taken in the early 80’s (Jan ’80 – July ’80 and July ’81 – Nov ’82). For those of us who rocked “What’s My Age Again” on the way to cheerleading practice, this will (hopefully) be the defining recession of our lives. We’ve never seen anything like this and many remain cautious with their money in the face of an unfamiliar and dismal economy. Optimistic predictions put the end of this recession in fall of 2009, long after these tours have packed it in. No one can tell what spending will do in the meantime.

I am skeptical that this will be the concert coup of the summer, but I also wonder if this isn’t exactly what the weary consumer needs: an escape from the never-ending bad news cycle and a retreat to simpler, happier, younger times when your main focus was having a fun and maybe getting home by curfew. If ever there was a need for good music and good times, this would be it. Even if the concerts are prohibitively expensive, radio play of these and other Nineties acts is up. And the airwaves are still free. Happy reminiscing!

A Bust on PA's Entertainment Boom so Soon?

Yes, it’s true that our country is going through it's fair share of economic troubles and yes, it is our government's job to help make things right. However, some Pennsylvania lawmakers are stirring up controversy by wanting to remove the state's tax incentive program for filmmakers.

There is a $75 million tax incentive that allows movie and television productions that spend around 60 percent of their budgets in the state to receive up to 25 percent back in tax credit. Although it could seem like a slightly indulgent way for the film industry to make a little something back for manufacturing their movies and TV shows here, lawmakers should step back and take a closer look at the bigger picture.

With over 30 states holding similar incentives for the film industry, Pennsylvania has been standing comfortably within the top 5 states in attracting Hollywood business in an aggressively competitive field. With a steady stream of motion pictures pouring into the state, numerous businesses both locally owned and corporate have seen a constant increase in revenue, and will continue to do so as long as the product remains here. Some colleges have even begun offering new programs to train students for work in the film industry. With an abundant amount of crew and stagehands for the industry being hired straight from Pennsylvania, a dozen production sites and companies having been launched providing many job opportunities, as well as over $50 million in local spending, and some 25,000 hotel room nights in just one year in Southwestern Pennsylvania alone. These numbers are just the tip of the proverbial iceburg too, making it seem like the state's lawmakers are overlooking more than one positive outcome they’d be taking away from the area and the people involved in the industry.

Not only that, but cast and crew members usually live in the area where they are filming for the duration of the time, so they not only need basic necessities like groceries and clothing, but night outings, rental vehicles and haircuts are usually on their list as well. So, without the tax incentives all of this business would go somewhere else.

With a number of people who work in or around the industry writing to local newspapers complaining, and union members asking friends on the net to support the film industry and send their concerns about the revoke straight to the responsible lawmakers offices, it would seem that the majority rule is giving the idea two big fat thumbs down!

Airborne Toxic Event, Moving On Up

Having three Airborne Toxic Event shows behind me, I had a vague idea what to expect at their March 11 show at the Bowery Ballroom, but this was my first sold out ATE experience, and by far the largest venue, so I was eager to see what would change from their cramped gig at Pianos a year ago.

As both the venue and crowd were considerably larger, the band seems to have grown comfortably into their new surroundings. Though always a commanding front man, lead singer Mikel Jollett has shed the lovable geek he used to morph into between songs at previous NYC gigs. Gone is the adorable Garth-like “thank you very much” at every applause. The result is a more consistent stage presence, but this writer was a little sad to see that humble dimension of Jollett fall victim to the screaming fans.

Musically, the band was ever dependable, drawing mostly from their self-titled album out in 2008. Perhaps greater commercial success means audiences already know the songs and want to sing along. Or maybe relentless touring limits the time ATE can dedicate to new material. Whatever the reason, all but a couple of songs are already available on iTunes, which is unlike my previous ATE shows that featured several unknown tunes. While the lack of new songs was somewhat disappointing, the set was solid and energetic, with appearances by the Calder Quartet in a makeshift string section and an overwhelming number of tambourines.

After nearly an hour on stage, the band took their leave to recoup for the always predictable encore. This girl has already voiced her irritation at the requisite two song follow up, but drummer Daren Taylor did his best to bring back the tradition of earning your encore, leading the crowd, clapping the rest of the band onstage. Apparently the effort was more than sufficient, because about 20 people poured out to play some more. And throw tambourines.

Pulling out some rare new material, Jollett kept the audience on pause before the band, quartet, and various others exploded into “Innocence” and a small dance party. Physically, the band simply could not have given more to these last two songs, and seemed to love every sweaty minute of it. Some of the audience got to know violinist Anna Bulbrook a little better during her short-lived stage dive, while the rest of us learned why you don’t see much crowd surfing at ATE shows. Taking off the rockstar cool veil, the members of ATE looked like kids on Christmas morning, closing the night with “Missy.”

By the time it was through, the band’s enthusiasm had fully infected the audience, with this girl practically skipping out of the Bowery. No doubt The Airborne Toxic Event will be playing sold out shows in NYC for the foreseeable future and with good reason.

Butch Walker to Rescue Indie Rock from American Apparel

Just as indie rockstar wanna-be's rip off Butch Walker's songwriting style (and fail miserably), they too often steal his style.

Let's not forget it was Walker, in his Marvlous 3 days, who first wore the skinny tie. Of course, at this point, the wanna-be rockstar local band boys were still a little slow. It took a few years for them to dig this trend into the ground.

Then it was the bandanna. I remember the first time I saw Butch perform solo, he had one of the red rags flowing from his pocket. About a year later, the emo kids once again have killed the bandanna (RIP.)

Last night, at Webster Hall, Butch Walker And His Gang of Merry Musical Melodymakers took a stand against all the girl-pants-wearing boys, whether you realized it or not. Walker and co. took the stage in plaid shirts. Ok, minus Randy Michael, who always looks so dapper in his suits and fedoras and new hot dude Chris, who has a tattoo of a pin-up girl on a tiger (two of my favorite things), so that should not be covered up.

The subliminal message was evident.

Attn.Those who worship Butch Walker so much that you steal his style musically and fashionably:

Don't fall any further!

VICTIM.

Give your girlfriend her jeans back!

L-M-F-A-O, rock the beat and rock the show! Sky Blu and Red Foo brought the party to Orange County last week for UC Irvine’s Homecoming concert. Even if the weather was of the summer kind, this duo certainly heated up the scene even more with their new and improved lyric, “I’m in OC, bitch.” Born and raised in Hollywood, this twosome makes a family act look more than happening, as they hit the music scene with their mix of hip hop beats and electro spins. LMFAO starts a party that seems to never stop as their crowd rocks to their beats like Flava Flav rocking to the tic tocs of his clock, but new and improved.

Although LMFAO seems to have come out of nowhere, this uncle-nephew pair has come a long way starting from the raw city of LA. With the influence of comedian, Eddie Murphy, on the performance aspect, Sky Blu and Red Foo have definitely learned a thing or two from performing individuals, as they know how to start a party. Performing everywhere from Hollywood’s New Years Eve 2009 Bash at the Paramount Studios Lot to MTV’s Spring Break in Cancun later this month, they continue to add a ton of performing experience, as well memorable stories to their list along with their committed fans’ lists, which include staying an hour after the show to take pictures and sign autographs. With their commitment to their music, party style attitudes, and fan base, LMFAO is full of unexpected surprises for their unique and distinct music.

One of the founders of modern day hardcore rock, Thursday, was named headliner with support from new school, death-defying British screamo act Bring Me The Horizon, along with Four Year Strong, Pierce the Veil, and Cancer Bats. All acts on this tour are incredibly strong and bring a certain fullness to the overall presence of the tour. Without a doubt, this is one of the most powerful years for Taste of Chaos and I think that if these bands tickle your musical fancy you should treat yourself to a night out.

Shocking fact:

Each year, approximately 6-8 million homeless pets enter shelters that are stretched to the breaking point. Sadly, about half of those animals have their shelter stay end in euthanasia rather than adoption.

She's a Survior: Aimee Allen Releases New Music

Aimee Allen has slowly been preparing her fans for a new listening experience. Songs like "I'm Here' and "Little Happiness" played on her MySpace page alongside more aggressive tracks like "Revolution" and "Miss America." Now, it's out with the old (though we'll still play them constantly) and in with three new revitalizing tracks.

"Change in Weather," "On Vacation" and "God Talks" show Allen took the positive road after her public breakup with Unwritten Law frontman and one-time musical collaborator, Scott Russo. Through the new tunes, she breathes light into her life and embarks on an exciting journey. Listeners will surely be able to relate. There's a feeling of freedom that just takes you away with her.

On Scott & Aimee tunes, Allen's lyrics suggested she was a "beautiful trainwreck." It's great to see she's survived the pain and binges and her train has taken the high road. We can't wait to see what comes next.

Stereogum has released video footage of Tinted Windows performing. It's so awesome to see Taylor fronting this band. However, I never thought I'd see him in a skinny tie! Hopefully now Hanson will see more mainstream respect, because love it or not, they are a talented straight-up rock band who just happen to all be brothers and have legions of young women falling at their feet.

Some have already said that Tinted Windows is just like Fountains of Wayne fronted by Hanson. You can waste your time being a critic or have fun, sing along (one listen and it's already stuck in my head) and just enjoy the music for what it's supposed to do: entertain you!

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha, Cheap Trick drummer Bun E. Carlos, Hanson's Taylor Hanson and Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger have formed a new band, Tinted Windows.

The group has recorded its debut album at Stratosphere Sound Studios in New York, which Schlesinger and Iha co-own with Ivy's Andy Chase. A spring release is planned, on a label to be announced.

In honor of St. Valentine's Day (you do know he was beheaded, right? Really romantic!), I've devised a list of songs that would horrify couples if they actually paid attention to (or understood) the lyrics while slowdancing.

"I Will Always Love You" - Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton
Despite the title, this is actually a breakup song. "It's Not You, It's Me" didn't flow as well with the melody.

"You Really Got a Hold On Me" - Percy Sledge
"I don't like you, but I love you" is something a kid says to their brother in an awkward, rare moment of bonding. It is not something you say to a lover when things are going well.

"How Do I Live" - LeAnn Rimes, Trisha Yearwood
Not only is there not a single rhyme anywhere in this song--seriously, check--but it's disturbing. You live the way anyone else would. You consume, you respirate. This is not a love song. It is a dependency song. It is a needy song. Ew, neediness. Gross.

"Your Song" - Elton John
Ladies, if a man really loved you? He'd know for sure what color your damn eyes are. Then again, that song wasn't written for us...

"Thinking of You" - Katy Perry
That's really cute. "When I'm boning him, I'm actually picturing you." That'll win him over!

"Love Story" - Taylor Swift
Listen, I like Taylor Swift. I think she's got an amazing ear for hooks and that she's almost ridiculously pretty. But this song just doesn't make sense. Romeo and Juliet killed themselves. Hester Prynne ("I was a scarlet letter") was an adulterer. This love story probably ends with herpes. Or worse.

"Every Breath You Take" - The Police
I am absolutely playing this at my wedding. I want whoever I'm marrying to know that if and when we break up, I will always know where he sleeps, but will maintain just enough distance to avoid violating my restraining order.

Tragic Fire Robs Scott Russo of Home & Pets

Unwritten Law frontman, Scott Russo, lost his home and pets to in a fire last week.

On the band's MySpace, this statement was made:

House of Blues San Diego will hold a benefit concert tomorrow evening featuring Grammy-nominated artists Jason Mraz and Switchfoot as well as Unwritten Law and Timmy Curran to help restore damages from the recent house fire affecting Scott Russo of San Diego band Unwritten Law.

Lead Singer Scott Russo’s Rancho Penasquitos family home caught fire on Thursday February 5, leaving an estimated $500,000 worth of uninsured damage.

“I am at a complete loss for words,” Russo says. “My entire family is now homeless, all our pets are gone and our earthly possessions have been lost. In these tough times, my family had been out of work and the financial burden was too heavy for me to afford fire insurance. The support from my friends has been overwhelming.”

An outpouring of music community support has helped create this benefit concert to raise funds for the family. Jason Mraz and Switchfoot will be performing a special acoustic set as well as full on rock performances by Unwritten Law and pro-surfer and musician Timmy Curran. House of Blues, Ticketmaster and all artists have donated their time and resources to support the cause.

Tickets for the Russo Benefit concert are $45 for general admission and $100 for balcony seats and will go on sale today, Monday, February 9 at 12pm. Ticketmaster will also hold an auction for the last remaining 100 tickets. Tickets are available via the House of Blues box office and Ticketmaster. The show is ages 21 and up. All proceeds of the concert will go to the Russo Family.

He's Just Not That Into You... Because You're in a Crappy Movie

Like so many avid readers, I cringe a little when a favorite book is made into movie. When I heard that He’s Just Not That Into You was going Hollywood, I cringed more than usual – I was actually a little terrified. But I dutifully bought my tickets and waited on line to watch the movie on opening night with some girlfriends after which I realized I had been out of line cringing prior to the movie’s release. Vomiting would have been more appropriate.

The movie centers around Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin), an innocent and adorable 20-something who is clearly deficient when it comes to the male gender and dating in general. The other women and men in her life get wrapped up into the mess and soon we’re learning about all of their messy relationships. In Baltimore, the "almost to DC" stop on the Acela, we are taken on a little trip through the 2-exciting-dimensions of our main characters.

Gigi, Beth, and Janine (Goodwin, Jennifer Aniston, and Jennifer Connelly) work in the same office. What they do is of no importance, as we hear nothing about it except that it has something to do with nutmeg. The only excitement in the office is about men, the only conversations about men, and the only reason these women have to interact is about men. To call them "friends" grossly overstates their relationships with one another, but they are as close as this move comes to demonstrating that women sometimes want to hang out... but again, only to talk about men.

This is symptomatic of a larger issue I take with the movie – these women have nothing – nothing – going on in their lives. They don’t have hobbies, pals, exercise routines. Most don’t even have families, except in one case where the parents are used as a convenient path to get the man back into her life. Thank god for those men. These women simply don’t exist without them.

Granted, it’s a romantic comedy (or at least bills itself as such) so that there is a heavy focus on men isn’t a surprise, but the movie makers rested too heavily on the popularity of the book and the gullibility of women to shill HJNTIY. They give audiences no reason to be engaged in the characters, no reason to care if Craz... sorry, Gigi ever gets her man, except to prove the love rules of a comedian from the late 90s.

I was personally insulted that the producers, directors, and writers assumed that there is simply nothing else these women could do with their lives (read a book, maybe, go for a run, head to a museum) and that audiences would buy that. I was depressed to find out that the audience in my theater was exactly that demographic – they gasped when love came through, when exceptions to rules were made and marriage vows promised. They laughed at the jokes of "women" behavior – hair clogs in the drain, sweeping up their own angsty messes, blow-drying their hair. Oh the hilarity!

At the end of the day, the movie exists to make money, and I get that. But to make movie based on a self-help book, one would assume that the movie shares the goal of the book – to help women wise up to the silliness of some stereotypical behavior. I was actually a big fan of He’s Just Not That Into You because it pressed women to stop obsessing about men. He’ll let you know if he’s interested, if he’s not, don’t sweat it. I can get on board with that message.

The movie fails impress that logic into audiences. These women constantly obsess about men and dating, regardless of the irrationality of it. They openly make fools of themselves and justify it with "at least I still have hope" or some such nonsense. They break every rule laid out in this fairly reasonable book, but it’s ok because love prevails. Who cares if that love had to be ripped out of the man’s clenched, unyielding fists? He’s totally into you... or will be if you just try a little harder.

Singer-songwriter to run Epic Records

Amanda Ghost, co-writer of James Blunt's You're Beautiful, has been named president of the label home to Michael Jackson, George Michael and Jennifer Lopez

In a move that is either devilishly clever or ridiculously misconceived, Epic Records has named Amanda Ghost – co-writer of James Blunt's You're Beautiful – as its new president.

Ghost comes to the role with little or no management experience. The main qualification of the celebrated songwriter is that, well, she's a celebrated songwriter. Besides You're Beautiful, Ghost also co-wrote Beyoncé and Shakira's hit Beautiful Liar and has worked with Kanye West, the Prodigy and Britney Spears. Ghost is also herself a singer-songwriter.

"I'm not a conventional choice as a music business executive," Ghost admitted in a statement. "[But] I'm here to draw on my experiences as an artist, songwriter and producer to make the new and existing artists signed to Epic as brilliant and successful as possible."

The decision is a bold one, recalling Rick Rubin's troubled ascension at Sony. Then again, Ghost's talents are not merely academic – You're Beautiful helped Blunt to achieve more than 14m album sales.

Viewed more sceptically, Ghost has not demonstrated much marketing acumen with her own recording career. Her albums have not had chart success and James Blunt's insipid balladry remains the singer-songwriter's main claim to fame.

As president of Epic, Ghost will be responsible for overseeing the label's management and creative direction – as well as the careers of artists such as Franz Ferdinand, Jennifer Lopez, Editors, Sade and Ozzy Osbourne.

Robbers on High Street Take Low (Effort) Road

Note to bands, managers, and concert planners: if, in planning your next show, you suffer lack luster ticket sales, 20 degree wind scaring away door sales, and an inexplicably incompetent ticket box, give away free ice cream and chocolate. That helps.

Such was the fate of Robbers on High Street show at their Saturday show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. With the East River deflecting freezing gusts onto the line at will call, the extended absence of the will call employee was especially upsetting. As my fellow line jockeys whined “why did I leave my coat in the car?” this girl momentarily wondered where exactly her cab had dropped her off – North Brooklyn or the North Shore. Luckily a table was set up inside to give away free ice cream sundaes (seriously) and each CD came with a bar of boutique dark chocolate. And if there’s free food, it doesn’t really matter where the cab took you, right?

Once inside, the shiny cleanness of the Music Hall was, as always, surprising. The aesthetic is painstakingly industrial and bare, putting a special onus on performers to fill the space. This is not a great venue to phone in a show, as we saw in some of the opening acts; thankfully, a particularly strong set by Jukebox the Ghost set off a much needed energy in the crowd, but it was a long way until Robbers on High Street took the reins on the audience. In the meantime, a lot of them went to grab a beer – somewhere else.

Robbers took the stage to find that a notable chunk of the audience had deserted them and their energy was low at the start of their set, which featured tunes from their last disc, Grand Animals. As the set rolled on, the band and the crowd warmed to each other, but it was telling that the biggest cheers and the most enthusiastic dancing came from the cover for Guilt by Association vol 2, “Cool It Now.” It wasn’t clear if the refresher came from a communal love of New Edition or the violinist who joined them on stage to bring honor to this 80s classic.

Following in a theme started by earlier bands, Robbers continued a light mocking of their audience – an audience that clearly deserved it after asking lead singer Ben Trokan to “tell a joke.” His refusal to oblige, justifying that his joke was “racist, sexist and homophobic” seemed the only appropriate response. Personally I would have like to see him hurl one of their ubiquitous Tecate bottles at the girl, but that’s just me.

In another example of how concerts are becoming overly contrived and predictable, Robbers said goodnight and headed off stage for approximately 3 minutes before coming out for their encore. Remember when encores had to be earned by the audience? Remember when you screamed and cheered and hoped and prayed that the band wasn’t done? Sometimes you won, but sometimes you got roadies wrapping up cords, but there was a suspense to it. Now audiences stand and wait for the obligatory extra two songs. Robbers did not disappoint the dozens of fans patiently waiting their re-entry.

Overall, the performance was unremarkable. Cameo appearances by the violinist, a trumpet and some maracas kept things somewhat lively, and the musicality of the band was obvious. But this girl couldn’t get over the feeling that the band would rather be doing anything else. For a solid band like Robbers, I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt and assume this was due to an underwhelming crowd, expansive venue, and the unpleasant combo of ice cream and Tecate. For any curious fans, definitely check them out live, but try a more intimate venue where their personalities are more pronounced. And bring a sixer of Tecate.

World, Meet Butch Walker

Butch Walker and Pink performed "Here Comes The..." off his new album, Sycamore Meadows, on Ellen today.

I'm really happy that he is finally where he should be- in the public eye for his own music. It may have taken tremendous loss (Google it if you don't know), but this should bring a bit of faith to everyone who really feels like they're at the lowest point in their lives, scratching and clawing for a way back to "normal." Fate has a plan. And for Butch, it was to take away all his material possessions and leave him with simply his soul, pets and family in order to get him in the mindset to write arguably his most personal, touching album to date.

Planet Verge has been leading the Butch parade for years now. He goes along with any crazy thing we happen to drag him into- from going on The Style Network's The Look for Less with Jordana as she got a makeover for her interview with him to contributing to our sex advice column back in the print days. What can we say? We love him and we're glad the world is finally going to pay attention to everything which we've been screaming!

Perhaps the longtime fans will "suffer" a bit because of the mainstream madness for Butch that will now surely ensue. Shows will sell out even faster and there may be the type of drunk girls you want to punch in the face singing along next to you at the next show. But, find solace in the fact that Butch's lyrics have touched another person's life and he is creeping one step closer to being regarded as famously as Jeff Buckley.

So Long and Thanks for All the Fish

Hey all. Wow! What can I say about my time spent with music reporting. It's something I've done for ten years. Although there is no fortune involved, I can honestly say I have a lot of glory.

I have been apart of Planet Verge since the "Fan 'zine"-style days ('02). Joelle and I worked on the Beacon (one of William Paterson University's newspapers) together. One day, she asked if I wanted to write for her music mag. I said sure. The rest is history.

Besides writing, I also raised funds for printing, since it was coming from out-of-Joelle's-pocket. Everyone was super supportive, even our professors. It's nice to see how it was coming a long. But like everything that's in print nowadays, moving to blog-style was the best move. Now PV is reached globally with an instant touch of a mouse.

I did take a hiatus from PV after my mom died and while I lived/worked in Korea. Mourning after my best friend/mother and trying to move-on like "all is normal" is not an easy task. Everyone functions with loss differently. Living and working in Korea truly changed me and my life for the better. I now have goals and dreams that I plan to conquer.

I will always be a huge music lover, or as my friends Jason S. and Thomas dub me, a "Music Goddess." Right now, all of my energy is focused on landing a full-time teaching job. Good news on that front-I had part one of an interview in Paterson last week, I have an interview in D.C., an interview in NYC, and if all does not go well with landing a job here, I'm back overseas again. Where? Either Korea or Japan. I love being in the classroom and engaging in learning with my students. I have learned so much from them. I even find ways to incorporate music in my lessons. For instance, I like to use the song, "What a Wonderful World" in my basic ESL classes because of the use of colors and visuals.

As I finish up here, I do want to say that Joelle, it has been a pleasure. It was an honor being apart for the ride. I will always be around if you need advice, ideas, or vent. So I want to leave here with some fond memories of PV from behind the scenes that some/most/all of you might not even know but hopefully can appreciate:

*When I tried interviewing a certain performer, his PR person was a total bitch. The interview was lined up and everything and then they snubbed me. Now-where is this artist? Let's just say karma got the best of him, and he's filed under "Where are they now?"

*Watching "Almost Famous" before and after taking music reporting seriously is like watching a how-to guide on music reporting all thanks to the words of music writer genius Lester Bangs. Rule #1-"Never make friends with the rock stars." Rule #2-"Be honest and unmerciful."

*After a show, a few staff members were invited for the after party. Where was the after party? A high class strip club in Tribeca (not our choice but then again not like we had a say). :) We left when things were getting too crazy.

*Joelle finally allowed politics to be mentioned on here. Woah! :)

*Joelle helped give me some good advice while my late great dog Rebel and my mom were in their last weeks.

*After a Fixer show at CBGB's (I miss that sweat hole), a friend, who I will keep nameless because I don't want her to get in trouble, and I danced on top of a bar (not topless/clothes completely on) at Bar 2 x 4 in the East Village. Our bar tunes were, "Pour some Sugar on Me"(classic Def Leopard) and "Closer (NIN)." I can't speak for my friend but I can speak for myself, I was completely sober and carefree for that fun-filled evening. After our dancing numbers, the bartenders offered us shots and to put our bras on the ceiling with the others. We took the shots, but kept our bras on (it was my fav. bra).

*I gave Matt Groening (creator/Simpsons genius) a copy of PV at the All Tomorrow's Parties festival in Long Beach, CA back in '03. I strongly believe he read it. God only knows if he kept it, but he is a huge music fan; hence why so many musicians/artists have been guest voices for the past 20+ years on the show.

*One thing is for certain, the music/entertainment industry lends for some eccentric people. Some real and some fake. A piece of advice to any future music writers: stay true to yourself and don't get lost in a crowd.

*All of the knowledge I learned on creating a home-grown business, its freakin' tough. But I give the future of PV credit. Moving on to internet TV might be the best thing handed to them since internet TV is the new wave of technology.

*The hidden secret behind my Concert Junkie name. Concert-because I'm an addict. I can barely afford to go to them anymore. Junkie-I took it from the late great Hunter S. Thompson's book, Better than Sex: Confessions of a Political Junkie.

*Blood, sweat and tears went into making each issue of PV and now its a bag of Cheetos for each blog-post. :)

I leave this with a quote from one of my favorite albums of all time, "And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make."

I'm sure you've all seen the photos of a slightly more robust Jessica Simpson. Frankly, I think a lot of what seems like weight gain was the effect of unflattering pants (not everyone is built to rock a high waist)--but that's beside the point. The fact is, she's still betterlooking than I and a good 90% of the world's population, with or without an extra five pounds.

My issue is with her nepotist sister, Ashlee.

Following the release of Jessica's photos, Ashlee posted a blog saying that "All women come in different shapes, sizes, and forms and just because you're a celebrity, there shouldn't be a different standard" and musing, "How can we expect teenage girls to love and respect themselves in an environment where we criticize a size 2 figure?" She also got really deep: "A week after the inauguration and with such a feeling of hope in the air for our country, I find it completely embarrassing and belittling to all women to read about a woman's weight or figure as a headline on Fox News."

Fair enough. I agree that Fox News has more pressing and pertinent things to run, like how our president's middle name is Hussein and that he's a Socialist.

But there are still three problems here, sweetheart. One, if you're going to embrace all sizes, at least be honest about them. Jessica Simpson is not a size 2. Neither was Jennifer Love Hewitt. I am not a size 2--I am lucky to squeeze my behind into a 6--but I don't lie about it to make myself feel better. I embrace my bodaciousness, and so do the creepy construction workers on West 57th.

Two, what the Hell does Obama have to do with this?

And three: You got a nose job. Pot, meet Kettle.

Concert Junkie Gives a Brief Inaugural Review

Its official. America swore in the first African American president at 12:05 P.M. on Jan. 20, 2009. Barack Obama took the Oath of Office in front of over two million people, who were lucky enough to be at the actual event despite the frigid temperatures, and a global audience of billions. One does not have to be a political expert or fan to honor this moment in American history.

Obama inherits the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, two wars (not also counting the tensions in Mumbai and Gaza), the threat of Global Warming and Schools not quite making their marks and a failed Healthcare system. This is a huge order for the native Hawaiian to tackle. However, Americans can rest assure, we now have someone in office who is willing to actually unite instead divide (for real this time), interrogate instead of torture and resolve instead of invade.

When Epitaph Records releases LeATHERMOUTH'S debut, XO, this week, don't expect it to soar to the top of any Billboard charts.

Though the band is fronted by My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero, that's where any similarities between the bands end. True MCR fans---the ones who appreciate the music, not the swoon-worthy looks of its members---will most likely not be rushing out to purchase XO. It is, indeed, a dramatic creative departure for Iero. For those who were pulled into My Chem's Kingdom of hook-heavy melodies, this album is far from an easy listen.

That's what makes it so great. Iero states:

“For me LeATHERMOUTH is how I can vent about all the bullshit that I see going on in the world that makes me ill. I try to belabor the topics people want to forget exist. LeATHERMOUTH is where I can vomit out all the aggression that has built up inside. After recording or playing a LM show I feel empty of all that hatred that’s been bottled up. It’s a pleasant, cathartic experience. I would love to not feel the way I do about certain things, and have rainbows and birds chirping in my head, but that’s just not the way I’m built. I am embarrassed by my emotions and originally wanted to keep LeATHERMOUTH anonymous...but fuck it, none of us are perfect, the world is going to shit, and someone has to say it. I think it would be worse if I hid from it.”

Through LeATHERMOUTH, Iero will reach a whole new audience of fans. Count on all the hardcore kids who thought they were too cool to listen to MCR to be converted.

Don't forget, Iero's music roots began in the NJ punk scene when he sang in Pencey Prep. It's no surprise he wants to continue pursuing other musical styles.

A true artist always evolves and experiments. They use their canvas--whether it be paint or an instrument-- to expand the minds of their audience and express themselves. That's exactly what's going on with XO.

I went to Urban Outfitters today during lunch. Every time I'm there, I always feel like the workers are judging you and the customers (who think going shopping there is

I just buy the houseware items. They have cute lamps and plates.

However, I find the clothes to be TOTALLY overpriced and pretty much U-G-L-Y.

Chris Bergson Fights Blizzard, Music Monotony

Going to the concert of a pop or standard rock act, one pretty much knows what they’re getting into. Maybe there’s some variety of the songs or which album the band pulls from, but the songs themselves deviate minimally, if at all, from their original CD version. A blues show, on the other hand, offers as many twists and turns as musically possible and, as Chris Bergson demonstrated on Friday at Union Hall, treats even avid fans to a new musical experience.

Friday also saw the first real snow storm of New York’s winter and as the crowd filtered through Brooklyn, the snow turned to freezing rain, culminating into a slushy mess. The cold and grey was the perfect backdrop for an evening of blues. Chris started with two solo numbers, alternating between guitars as he eased the crowd into the night. After “Sanctuary,” a good exercise for the heartstrings, Matt Clohesy and Tony Leone came up to join on bass and drums, respectively. The band quickly picked up the pace and the crowd was eager for the gear change.

Once the tempo and material lightened up, Bergson’s guitar skills took center stage as the band riffed through their latest disc, Fall Changes. What they lacked in new material, they more than made up for in musicality. Every song featured an impressive solo, usually from Bergson, but both Clohesy and Leone were showcased individually, and rightly so.

The humble stage at Union Hall provided a cozy and understated venue for their talent and let the crowd experience each others’ reactions as well as the music. From the cuddling couples to small groups of pals, a sense of camaraderie swept the audience and added a kind of intimacy rarely found in larger venues or pop shows. Except for the light banging sound from the bocce court above, the show could just have easily been in your friend’s basement – if you happened to be friends with a really stellar blues trio.

Tiger parts are extremely valuable and every part of their body is illegally traded. People even make tiger penis soup. There's a "cure" for everything if you medicate with a tiger...at least that's what some cultures believe.

I've been active in saving tigers for many years and even adopted a few tigers through The Siberian Tiger Project. The quarterly newsletters and updates were really exciting. Until every tiger I adopted ended up dead-- victims of falling trees from loggers or poachers. I can't imagine a world without these majestic creatures and it really upsets me that the killing continues.

Snowed In

I pretty much dread the snow. Just the mention of it sends shivers down my legs and not because I'm cold, but because I am scared to death of driving in it. Anyone who has even been in a car with me can attest that I am perhaps not the best driver and at one time or another they have feared for their lives in the passenger seat. I'd had my fair share of accidents in the rain and snow. What's funny is that I even managed to get hit once when I pulled off on the side of the road because I saw cars sliding into the curbs. Ok, so it's not funny.

Yesterday morning when the first flakes began to fall and blanket the sidewalk outside my job, I decided it was time to jet. Having only been in the office for an hour, I had the whole day to work at home, watch my snow dogs play in their winter wonderland while wishing I had my camera and catch up on things I've been meaning to review.

What better time to watch a DVD of the biggest summer music fest than when you're snuggled under blankets and drinking Egg Nog flavored coffee?

I ditched Warped Tour completely last summer.

My reasons?

* At 27, I am old enough to be half those kids moms by now (or at least it feels that way)

* I had a love-hate relationship with this business of music I'm in the past year and have therefore been a bit disconnected.

* Bamboozle, which happens 20 minutes from my house, has become such a giant and hosts pretty much the same bands, why should I travel hours in traffic for Warped?

* Warped took away the 'zine tent. Planet Verge had a table there every year. It was such a blast to get up at 5 am, load in heavy suitcases of magazines and flyers and then sweat for hours behind our table. Seriously. No zine tent, nothing to separate us from the mass amounts of newbie punks or to relax in between bands you don't care about.

Anyway.... while watching the Warped Tour '07 DVD, I sorta missed it all.
But just like at the festival, I skipped past all the bands I don't care about on the DVD.

Why, why, why is there a need for multiple DVD segments on Pepper, Fishbone and other filler bands when SO MANY bands play at Warped?

The Starting Line (Their song was the highlight of my DVD-watching experience because I caught Kirsten Storms >> aka Maxie Jones on General Hospital << in the background watching them w/her man from Red Jumpsuit Apparatus.

I did enjoy watching the artist interviews and the behind-the-scenes footage, but in a nutshell, the Warped DVD's could be so much more. With 83 bands playing in 45 cities, film crews had plenty of time to capture that content. Maybe next year... and maybe I'll be there.

But, I do enjoy the fact that the last band I watched on Warped Tour was Eighteen Visions. Sorta like a happy ending. It was the best Warped set.

My next fun snow day activity was listen the Casual Projects CD that came in the mail. This is hip-hop oriented funk band from Australia.

They are awesome. I discovered them when I was sorting through entries for the Independent Music Awards. They are actually finalists now for their song "Move Along."

Hey everyone! To quote John Lennon, "Another year [is] over and a new one just begun." So much has happened in the topsy-turvy world of 2008. Awesome tours and reunions took place, while an over abundance amount of festivals popped up. We said farewell to some highly influential performers. The world economy is slip-sliding away with one of the worst global recessions. America broke a huge barrier and made history with the monumental victory of Barack Obama as the new President Elect. The music world is on rocky grounds, while Axl finally releases "Chinese Democracy." I don't know about you, but I know I continued to melt my face with some awesome tuneage. So let's take a shot of Drambuie (one of the shittiest alcohols known to man) or toast with the finest Champagne (cheers) to 2008's politics and music.

Drambuie me: Radiohead's "In Rainbows" was supposed to release to stores the first week of 2008. However, it started going on sale earlier than expected. It doesn't matter though, the band is nominated for various Grammys, including album of the year. Plus, they started the trend of allowing their fans to pick a price for what they want to pay for their music. It can be downloaded for free. Turns out, most true fans paid for their downloads.

Cheers: Awesome 71 year old musician, Buddy Guy hit the road and played some shows. Jay-Z released the track "Ain't I." The Mars Volta shredded and rocked at Terminal 5. Once again, another mind-blowing amazing set. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss release “Raising Sand.”

Drambuie me: A huge focus was geared on the 2008 Election because George W. Bush was entering his last year in office with the lowest approval ratings since Herbert Hoover.

Cheers: Bush enters his last year in office, and gave his final State of the Union Address (aka-fun drinking game). Obama surprises everyone and wins the Iowa primary. About twenty-four different European countries lift their border police and allow people to travel through them freely.

Cheers: The Giants win the Superbowl!! Oh wait that has nothing to do with politics. :) The Democratic race starts to become a nail-biter between Obama and Hilary Clinton. Both won a majority of the votes on Super Tuesday. Despite Obama losing the New Hampshire primary, he delivered his famous “Yes We Can” speech; thus creating Will.i.am’s song “Yes We Can.”

Bear Stearns is the first to get emergency money from the government and JP Morgan bail them out. Sub-prime Mortgage crisis takes full swing. Elliot Spitzer gets caught up in a prostitute scandal. Clinton reveals Rev. Jeremiah Wright to the news media.

Cheers: The EPA announces to expand and fight smog in US cities and towns. Tibetans start to challenge China with protests about China's not-so-clean human rights record. In response to Clinton’s unraveling of Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s harsh words towards America, Obama delivers a historical speech about race in Philadelphia. This was the defining moment of the Primary.

Needless to say, the game did not sell well.

Athletes Antonio Pettigrew and Michael Johnson give back their gold medals. The America’s Climate Security Act of 2007 stalls in the US senate. About seven people were killed and 10 injured in Japan coincidentally coinciding with the Seventh Anniversary of the Osaka School Massacre. Floods occur in the mid-west. Hundreds of Koreans protest beef deal with US over the concern of Mad Cow Disease. Many people were severely injured by the police during the protests because of their use of water cannons and night sticks.

Cheers: Obama becomes the first African-American to win a party’s nomination. Clinton suspends her campaign and endorses Obama. Bush goes to Europe one last time. After a decade of waiting, China and Taiwan resume talks. California courts allow same-sex marriage. Two Bear Stearn Hedge Fund Managers were arrested and faced criminal charges.

Cheers: Swimmer Michael Phelps breaks Mark Spitz’s record and wins eight gold medals(I know I know not politics). Jamaica’s Usain Bolt becomes the fastest man alive, and breaks world records at the Olympic games. The Democrats host their national convention in Denver, CO.

Bush asks for $700 billion for a bail-out. McCain post-pones his campaign, but doesn’t exactly go to Washington right away.

Cheers: The bail-out was first rejected. McCain puts his campaign on pause. The presidential debates begin. Rachel Maddow has her own show on MSNBC.

I was shocked and saddened to hear that Bettie Page died. She may be gone, but there's no doubt her spirit and style will continue to inspire women around the world. She certainly made an impact on my life.

Bettie Page, the brunet pinup queen with a shoulder-length pageboy hairdo and kitschy bangs whose saucy photos helped usher in the sexual revolution of the 1960s, has died. She was 85.

Page, whose later life was marked by depression, violent mood swings and several years in a state mental institution, died Thursday night at Kindred Hospital in Los Angeles, where she had been on life support since suffering a heart attack Dec. 2, according to her agent, Mark Roesler.

A cult figure, Page was most famous for the estimated 20,000 4-by-5-inch black-and-white glossy photographs taken by amateur shutterbugs from 1949 to 1957. The photos showed her in high heels and bikinis or negligees, bondage apparel -- or nothing at all.

Decades later, those images inspired biographies, comic books, fan clubs, websites, commercial products -- Bettie Page playing cards, dress-up magnet sets, action figures, Zippo lighters, shot glasses -- and, in 2005, a film about her life and times, "The Notorious Bettie Page."

Then there are the idealized portraits of her naughty personas -- Nurse Bettie, Jungle Bettie, Voodoo Bettie, Banned in Boston Bettie, Maid Bettie, Crackers in Bed Bettie -- memorialized by such artists as Olivia de Berardinis.

"I'll always paint Bettie Page," De Berardinis said Thursday night . "But truth be told, it took me years to understand what I was looking at in the old photographs of her. Now I get it. There was a passion play unfolding in her mind. What some see as a bad-girl image was in fact a certain sensual freedom and play-acting - it was part of the fun of being a woman."

"The origins of what captures the imagination and creates a particular celebrity are sometimes difficult to define," Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner said Thursday night. "Bettie Page was one of Playboy magazine's early Playmates, and she became an iconic figure, influencing notions of beauty and fashion. Then she disappeared. . . . Many years later, Bettie resurfaced and we became friends. Her passing is very sad."

In an interview 2 1/2 years ago, Hefner described Page's appeal as "a combination of wholesome innocence and fetish-oriented poses that is at once retro and very modern."

According to her agents at CMG Worldwide, Page's official website, www.BettiePage.com, has received about 600 million hits over the last five years.

"Bettie Page captured the imagination of a generation of men and women with her free spirit and unabashed sensuality," said Roesler, chairman of the Indianapolis-based CMG Worldwide, who was at Page's side when she died. "She was a dear friend and a special client and one of the most beautiful and influential women of the 20th century."

A religious woman in her later life, Page was mystified by her influence on modern popular culture. "I have no idea why I'm the only model who has had so much fame so long after quitting work," she said in an interview with The Times in 2006.

She had one request for that interview: that her face not be photographed.

"I want to be remembered," she said, "as I was when I was young and in my golden times. . . . I want to be remembered as the woman who changed people's perspectives concerning nudity in its natural form."

Bettie Mae Page was born April 22, 1923, in Nashville. She was the oldest girl among Roy and Edna Page's six children. Her father, an auto mechanic, "molested all three of his daughters," Page said in the interview.

Her parents divorced in 1933, but life didn't get any easier for Bettie.

"All I ever wanted was a mother who paid attention to me," Page recalled. "She didn't want girls. She thought we were trouble. When I started menstruating at 13, I thought I was dying because she never taught me anything about that."

After high school, Page earned a teaching credential. But her career in the classroom was short-lived. "I couldn't control my students, especially the boys," she said.

She tried secretarial work and marriage. But by 1948 she had divorced a violent husband and fled to New York City, where she enrolled in acting classes. She was noticed on the beach at Coney Island by New York police officer and amateur photographer Jerry Tibbs, who introduced her to camera clubs.

Page quickly became a sought-after model, attracting the attention of Irving Klaw and his sister, Paula, who operated a mail-order business specializing in cheesecake and bondage poses.

Under contract with the Klaws, Page was photographed prancing around with a whip, spanking other women, even being hog-tied. She also appeared in 8-millimeter "loops" and feature-length peekaboo films with titles like "Betty Page in High Heels."

"I had lost my ambition and desire to succeed and better myself; I was adrift," Page recalled. "But I could make more money in a few hours modeling than I could earn in a week as a secretary."

Her most professional photographs were taken in 1955 by fashion photographer Bunny Yeager. They included shots of Page nude and frolicking in waves and deep-sea fishing, and a January 1955 Playboy centerfold of her winking under a Santa Claus cap.

At 35, Page walked away from it all. She quit modeling and moved to Florida, where she married a much younger man whose passions, she later learned, were watching television and eating hamburgers.

Page fled from her home in tears after a dispute on New Year's Eve in 1959. Down the street, she noticed a white neon sign over a little white church with its door open.

After quietly taking a seat in the back, she had a born-again experience. Page immersed herself in Bible studies and served as a counselor for the Billy Graham Crusade.

In 1967, she married for a third time. After that marriage ended in divorce 11 years later, Page plunged into a depression marked by violent mood swings. She argued with her landlady and attacked her with a knife. A judge found her innocent by reason of insanity but sentenced her to 10 years in a California mental institution.

She was released in 1992 from Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino County to find that she had unwittingly become a pop-culture icon. A movie titled "The Rocketeer" and the comic book that inspired it contained a Bettie-esque character, triggering a revival, among women as well as men, that continues unabated.

With the help of admirers including Hefner, Page finally began receiving a respectable income for her work.

In an interview published in Playboy magazine in 2007, Page expressed mixed feelings about her achievements. "When I turned my life over to the lord Jesus I was ashamed of having posed in the nude," she said. "But now, most of the money I've got is because I posed in the nude. So I'm not ashamed of it now. But I still don't understand it."

She spent most of her final years in a one-bedroom apartment, reading the Bible, listening to Christian and country tunes, watching westerns on television, catching up on diet and exercise regimens or sometimes perusing secondhand clothing stores.

Occasionally, however, Page was persuaded to visit the Sunset Boulevard penthouse offices of her agents at CMG Worldwide to autograph pinups of herself in the post-World War II years of her prime. The agency controls her image and those of Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana, among others.

During one such event in early 2006, Page needed about 10 minutes to get through the 10 letters of her name. As she pushed her pen over a portrait of her in a negligee with an ecstatic smile, she laughed and said, "My land! Is that supposed to be me? I was never that pretty."

She is survived by her brother Jack Page of Nashville and sister Joyce Wallace of Blairsville, Ga.

Natasha Bedingfield and Solange Knowles Ring in Cosmo's First-Ever StarLaunch Female Rock Star

On The Verge was there for an exclusive interview with Mieka who will be spending her $10K prize money on recording and touring. Humbled and excited, Mieka joked about where she could cash her life-sized first place check. All three finalists were excited to be opening for Solange Knowles and Natasha Bedingfield.

Oh Hai Mucc - Japanese Metal Takes Over The Fillmore

Japan is widely regarded as a closed society and is incredibly homogenous – 99% of Japan’s population is 100% Japanese. It is also fiercely protective of its culture, with strict standards for behavior, clothing and appearance. Sort of like that FLDS compound in Texas, but without the polygamy. Or those Little House on the Prairie dresses.

So imagine my surprise, upon walking into the Fillmore on December 7 to see the Japanese metal group Mucc, to find a huge group of Japanese teenagers decked out in their Hot Topic-finest, complete with black latex, red plaid, and fill-in-the-blank wacky hair color. Equally unexpected was the other half of the crowd who appeared to be homegrown, white-bred Americans. That they spoke no Japanese did not stop them from singing along with Mucc’s heavily eye-linered lead singer, Tatsurou.

While the lyrics may not have immediately resonated with the English speaking crowd, the music translates well into American rock. The instrumentals could easily be confused with Korn or Disturbed. Seemingly eager to appeal to his American audience Tatsurou adopted several typical rockstar-isms, repeatedly asking that they “go fucking crazy” or “fuck it.” His limited English kept the between-song banter to a minimum, but the bands' hardcore shell cracked for one adorable moment about halfway through the set: while catching his breath, Tatsurou told the crowd he was “so happy come again.”

Based on this performance, and if more people can get into Japanese lyrics, Mucc stands a good chance of breaking into mainstream American rock. They are great performers who connected to the audience and moved their fans to hit one another in one song and cry in the next (no joke – actual tears were shed). While their decisively untraditional hair and makeup suggest that they are jazzed to shed the conventional Japanese image and jump into American rock, one aspect of Japanese culture snuck in – every band member I could see was barefoot.

As a manufactured posterchild for AutoTune, the fact that you even received a Grammy nomination in the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance category, despite not being able to sing live to save your life, is a pretty big deal. For you to then post a blog entry implying that you got "shafted" when you were "shut out" of the other categories is an insult. It's an insult to my ears and to the industry that morphed you from an attention-starved blonde Christian artist who can't sing to an attention-starved brunette pseudopinup who still can't sing but has good producers.

Any number of artists would kill just to get signed, let alone nominated for a Grammy in any one category, and this is how you thank the Academy?

Katy, you're not Kanye. Establish some credibility as an artist instead of as a puppet. Learn to sing live instead of jumping into cakes. Use your vocal chords to do your job instead of running your over-lipsticked mouth. The right to throw a tantrum is reserved to those with talent. Stop biting the hands that feed you, or you'll soon be starving--and you'll deserve that more than any award I can imagine.

Planet Verge caught up with close personal friend Nick Wheeler of the All-American Rejects, who discussed their new album, When the World Comes Down, a day in the life, and why he hates new lineups of classic rock bands.

How's New York treating you?
It's awesome! We're taping the Today Show tomorrow. That's gonna be fun, except soundcheck is at 6:15. In the morning. I'm going to bed by like, 5 p.m. tonight.

That's a lot earlier than you're used to.
Yeah, but it's cool 'cause we don't have a show tonight, so I'll be able to rest a little bit.

You guys have been touring for a while. What's a typical day like? Any fun debauchery?
No, no real debauchery... We're actually kind of boring. We'll sleep til around 12... Or 1... Or 2. Then we usually have to soundcheck by around 3. We have meet and greets daily, then it's showtime. But we do enjoy, as the British call them, "pints." We drink pints and watch a lot of movies on the bus.

Nice. What are your most-played DVDs?
We just finished Kickin' It Old School, and then there's the classics--your Big Lebowski, your Walk Hard and as always, your Kung Pow: Enter the Fist.

You were slated to play the Stone Pony. Isn't that small for you guys?
Yeah, we were gonna play there until they decided two days before that they felt like remodeling the roof. We like that we're playing smaller clubs and bars this tour. We haven't done that in a while. It feels good to get back to that.

What's the weirdest experience you've had at a meet and greet?
Some girl brought us Jell-o shots the other day. We didn't drink them, though. We didn't trust them. So we gave them to the opening band.

You gave the Jell-o shots to Jet Lag Gemini?
I'm just jokin'. I actually like those guys. I wouldn't do that to them, they're so nice.

You wrote your album all around the continent. What was your favorite or most inspiring locale?
We had the most fun in this random cabin in the woods in Georgia. We were there for 12 days and it was pretty insane. We'd wake up around 3 p.m. and drink wine til around 5 or 6. Then we'd drink beer til around 11 or 12. Then we'd write until around 4 or 5 a.m... Then do it again the next day.

Do you guys have any political songs on this record? Move Along had "Top of the World," which seemed like a poetic "fuck you" to George Dubya.
We don't have anything too overt. We feel like since we're in a position where a lot of our younger listeners can be influenced by what we say, we want to be careful about it. We don't think it's our place to tell people what or how to think or vote or what to believe. We do, though, have a sort of an apocalyptic love song--"Mona Lisa"--and a song called "Real World" that kind of examines the world a little. One of the lines in "Mona Lisa" is, "You can sit beside me when the world comes down." And "Real World" is like, "This can't be the real world now." As in things can't suck nearly this badly, can they?" Except, you know, not in those words. Tyson's a lot more poetic than I am--there's a big, huge reason why he writes the lyrics and I don't.

What's on your iPod lately?
This is gonna sound bad, but I really hate most new music that's out. I'm just generally unimpressed by almost everything that's being churned out recently.

You know, there's a new Guns n' Roses album out...
I do know, Jessica, and you know what else I know? And I know you know it too: We know it's a piece of shit. I mean, we waited, what? 17 years for that? Really? And you know what else I refuse to listen to? The new Queen. I can understand going on tour with a new singer since your old one is dead, but recording?

It's not Queen without Freddie.
Exactly! This is why we get along.

I'll let you get your rest in just a minute, but first: Butch Walker complained that no one asks questions like "What's your favorite color?" anymore. What's your favorite color?
You know, some other girl in New Jersey actually asked me that yesterday. I told her "11" and she yelled at me because that's a number and not a color. She didn't get it. But when someone asks something that dumb, how can you not give a smartass answer?

Fast Times, Good Times With The Academy Is

Last night I caught The Academy Is show at Roseland for their NYC stop for the Bill & Trav's Bogus Journey Tour. The Academy Is' 80s-themed tour name goes along well with their newest album name, that plays off the 1982 Cameron Crowe film as well, called "Fast Times at Barrington High." Barrington High is where Adam Siska (Bass) and William Beckett (Vocals) went to high school.

Adam and William shared some high school memories with me earlier that day in an exclusive video interview for On The Verge. While they sometimes felt like outsiders in high school, they warmly remember tapping into their love for music and allowing that to help them cruise through their years at Barrington High. Well that, and for Adam, cutting class helped too. I had to agree with him there.

After a long day of interviews with the likes of us, Sirius Radio, MTV and Seventeen, the guys went on to play an adrenaline-rushing hour-plus long set at Roseland. I recalled when I sat with William for On The Verge that day he was collected, insightful and dare I say... sweet. When I finished the interview, my impression of both William and Adam was that they were incredibly down to earth, smart, sweet guys. When I saw them on stage last night, they were rockstars: animated, sexy and fully playing off the crowd. There was but one moment of the show that reminded me of the guys I had met earlier that day: William is gearing up to play Winter Passing on acoustic guitar and gets hit by a full-cup white bra. While a typical rockstar (think 80s metal) might've picked the bra up and checked it out before draping it over his guitar neck, William instead tossed the bra to the back of the stage and said, "What are you gonna do now? You threw your bra on stage..." I laughed.

Back into rockstar-mode, William seemed to have down a perfectly choreographed mic-flipping, swinging and throwing routine that drove the fans crazy. All this while passionately belting out hit after hit - from the new loves like, About A Girl to old favorites (and apparently Butcher's favorite song to play live), Classifieds.

Butch Walker -Sycamore Meadows Tour

Listening to Butch Walker is like taking your first bite into a freshly baked cupcake, swimming in the Caribbean and walking through the park on a crisp fall day. You feel blissful, exhilarated and free.

Sometimes though, it's like getting a flat tire on the highway in the midst of a three hour drive or watching one of those Sarah McLachlan commercials for the ASPCA. It's life in all its ironic, tragic and timeless moments bottled up into three-minute unforgetable melodies.

From his glam-rock Marvelous 3 fronting days that launched him to semi-stardom with the hit "Freak of the Week," to his heart wrenching sophomore solo effort, Letters, and the get-the-party-started disc o'fun- The Rise and Fall of Butch Walker and the Let's Go Out Tonites- Walker has proved he's the underground Elvis of modern times. A living legend if you will. Sure, he gets the most recognition as a mega producer for Pink, Avril Lavigne and other chart-toppers, but the magic's in his own music.

His new album, Sycamore Meadows, is out now. It's arguably his most personal effort to date. "The Weight of Her" keeps the old fans happy and tracks like "Here Comes The..," and "Passed Your Place, Saw Your Car, Thought of You" are the heart wrenchers that will be stuck in your head. One of the standout tracks is now doubt the jazzy "Ponce de Leon Ave," along with "Going Back/Going Home," Walker's life story in three minutes.

Planet Verge had the pleasure of filming our upcoming Web-TV show, On the Verge, with Walker this past week. It was a splendid time. Here are some photos from his NYC and NJ shows. This was a quiet an intimate tour and I must say the damn drunk fools and WHOO HOO girls rained on the NYC show. But if they stick around, they'll learn and bow their heads in shame at their old ways. Concer Junkie: Wonders Why?

**Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't seen Religilous yet.**

French philosopher Rene Descartes once said, "I think therefore I am." What we learn from this quote and other philosophers is that we can't exist without the mind. We need the mind for feeling, learning, thinking and more importantly doubting. Now I separate thinking and doubting because some people can think, but they cannot doubt. For example, take the subject of religion. Its filed under the "Don't ask, don't tell" section, along with Sex and Politics. We've come to enjoy the jokes of Sex and Politics, sometimes combined(Larry Craig, Ted Haggard, Bill Clinton, etc.) But people still cannot embrace the occasional quip or question about religion. Why? Why is it so difficult to question belief? The recent film Religilous, which features comedian Bill Maher, takes the agnostic approach to the major faiths and asks the questions most true believers fail to ever ask.

The film takes you on a Questioning-of-Faith Journey to various states in the U.S., Netherlands, Israel, Puerto Rico, Italy and London. The first interview Maher conducts is in Raleigh, NC at a Trucker's Christian Chapel. Maher asks only one question and one trucker decides to walk out. The rest stay and answer as honestly and wholeheartedly as they could. Some other interviews were with the Jesus at Prophet Land, which is a religious amusement park in Orlando, FLA. Preacher Jose Luis de Jesus Miranda of Puerto Rico, who claims to be the second coming of Jesus, does not realize the silliness he is spewing from his lips (watch and you will hear). Another was also with an Anti-Zionist Jew. But my favorite was with a Senior Priest at the Vatican in Rome. Maher was able to get this priest on camera to say honestly that religion is "silly."

I'm not an atheist. I never ever claimed to be. I was born and raised Jewish, but as I read more and more, I embrace doubt. America was founded on the basis of religious freedom, and people have the right to believe in whatever they want, even in aliens and magic underwear (to an extent, when it comes to murder, rape or incest a line should be drawn). Why is it that with all the charity, peace and good will religion preaches, why is there war carried out based on these beliefs?

Somethings I felt the movie failed to mention is the Scientology boom on Hollywood Blvd. For a long time, no one really knew of this religion and science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard (Battlefield Earth is pretty bad). Some other facts it might have also wanted to mention are the amounts of rape/incest incidents among Mormon families, or the kidnapping of young girls once they turn 11. However, I know there were some time constraints and Maher did not cover every single religion. If he did the movie would have been two and half or three hours instead of two.

With the facts and topics discussed, Maher did an overall excellent job. Religilous is directed by Larry Charles (Borat). Whether you are a believer or not, go see this movie. It will open your eyes and mind. Do not be afraid to question the unknown, since that is all that it is.

It was obvious who the new-thanks-to-Ugly-Betty fans were because they were up front going ga-ga for Val, but didn't know the words to any of the songs except for "Get On with It."

Concert Junkie Gets Political, Again

Wow! Really? Wow! I don't know how else to describe my feelings. Wow is the best word. In 2004, I went to bed feeling queezy. Last night, I went to sleep with ease. America chose wisely. Today, we woke up to a refreshed America. An America that has no more limitations. Anyone can be anything they want to be, so as long as they do not give up hope.

When Obama recited his Lincoln/FDResque acceptance speech, an overwhelming feeling of relief swept me. Wars will end. Unity will be in sight. Our environment will be a priority (finally). Healthcare can eventually be solved. I know most of these issues will not be solved in his first year or term, but good things come to those who wait. America, we are patient. After all, we did wait a long time for this moment.

I started to reflect about history when Obama spoke about the 106 year old woman from Atlanta. As he went through each historical moment, I kept thinking what it would have been like to be a person in that time period and to go through the struggle. America, we have come a long way.

To take some of the words from the great Martin Luther King, Jr., we chose an African American President based on the content of his character and, very rarely, was he judged on the color of his skin (except for maybe in Utah and Oklahoma). I also want to associate Obama to King's speech about climbing the mountain to the Promise land. Over here in NJ, the heavens are crying happy tears from all the late great ones who fought and died for this moment. While the rain soaks the sidewalks and windshields, I can not help but think about the old documentaries of Civil Rights marches and the chants of "We Shall Overcome." America, we overcame and we are so much better for it. We can do anything.

THE WALK with Hanson

Hanson's 102nd Walk around the world to raise AIDS awarness was held Nov. 1st at Montclair State Univeristy. Planet Verge's Joelle & Roe walked one mile barefoot, with the band and about 200 other action takers. Hanson generously donates $1 per person to help African children. Concert Junkie: Rambles about Zeppelin Rumors

Anticipation is growing, rumors are flying, and I'm screaming in agony. I first heard the announcement of the legendary Led Zeppelin holding auditions for Robert Plant replacements earlier this week. I shrugged and said 'Meh.' However, I just read on the LA Times music blog of who the mighty Zeppelin might settle on for a replacement, I can't stay quiet any longer.

Myles Kennedy should not be the new Plant for Zep. First off, his voice does not compare to Plant. Scott Weiland, in his hay-day with STP, would have been a more sufficient choice than no-name Kennedy. I do not want Zeppelin to turn into the non-Robert Halford years of Judas Priest. If you are not sure about what I mean, try to watch the movie Rock Star. I know it is painful to get through the awful plot holes and extensions in Jennifer Anniston's hair, but that's why I said try. However, I wholeheartedly understand if you pass. The movie is about how Halford left Judas Priest, and how they hired Tim "Ripper" Owens, a no-name, who sang in a Judas Priest tribute band. He shared the stage with Priest for a brief stint, until the band realized they could set their egos aside and hire back the great one.

Another strike against Kennedy is he's from Creed. Now, for those who know me well know that I find Creed to be repulsive and talentless. They shared the same Christian rock fad as P.O.D(remember them?), which then spawned South Park's awesome episode of when Cartman started a Christian Rock Band. Kennedy will not generate people to go flocking to the arenas or outdoor theaters. Currently, according to the LA Times blog survey, over 60 percent of the readers surveyed, don't care for a tour if its not Plant, while four percent find this decision "awesome."

When Zep announced their charity show last year, millions of people from all over the world, registered in the lottery within the first hour alone. I don't think die hard Nickleback or Creed fans combined can generate anything close.

Please Jimmy, John, and Jason, stop your auditions and bring Plant to the table. You guys can most definitely negotiate something. Don't turn into the non-Halferd years! Plant put the Krauss album on hold. You know we'll want to hear it in another year or so, but while you still can hit the notes, go on tour with Zeppelin. It can seriously save the world economy. Think about it. Remember the old mantra guys: One rock show can save the world.

Houston Calls: We have no problem here.

What's unique about Houston Calls isn't just their ability to craft some of the best uptempo hooks in music today (though that certainly applies, too). It's their ability to convey wide ranges of genuine emotions, not just in one album, but in single songs.

In "Modest Manifesto," Tom Keiger sings of disheartening "graves of debt," a reflection on the difficulty to balance doing what you love with making a decent living. Building upon that theme, in "Life Won't Wait," Keiger laments, "I've got no four walls to call my own," while revealing a not-so-clandestine love for the Bouncing Souls; "A Shot in the Dark" says, just within its title, how making it in the music industry and in the realm of romance both require not only hard work and dedication, but also quite a bit of luck.

As usual, the band succeeds with their singalong tracks ("Modest Manifesto," "Life Won't Wait," "A Shot in the Dark," and the gang-vocal glory of "Abandone"). Their ballads generally fare relatively well ("Stay With Me Tonight," "The Oaks on Prince St."), but their strength was, is, and likely will remain with their most uptempo tracks.

"It's disheartening and it drives me crazy," Keiger sings of the music scene in "Modest Manifesto." A song later, he changes his tune and sticks up his chin: "Whatever was I thinking? The best times of my life are just beginning." Throughout the album's examinations of both relationships and the difficulties of making it in the music business, no matter how hard either one seems, the band maintains a decided and determined optimism, making them a true gem for listeners.

Hopefully, Houston Calls won't fall with this record. But if they do, fans can rest easy: They'll get back up again, and if their evolution up to this point is any indicator, they'll be even better when they do.

UnderOATH is Set to Take on the World.

In an age where the most popular radio hits are those that follow the trends and give in to what they know is safe, those artists are rarely remembered when the trends evolve. Thankfully there are still some bands that stay true to their beliefs and make an album condensed with raw emotion that unless used in a creative context would never be uttered as words and blend together a perfect mess of transcending creative mayhem. That is just what UnderOATH has done with their latest full-length success, Lost in the Sound of Separation, they achieved and went above and beyond.

This album is a collaboration of naked emotion that reveals both triumph and defeat and the pursuit of devastatingly furious instrumentals to accompany the audacious and guttural screams of vocalist Spencer Chamberlain. The sound on this album is bombastic and hard-rocking yet it’s crisp and refined. This album will crawl under your skin and entice your senses.

Without a doubt Lost in the Sound of Separation is one of the top 3 albums of 2008.

After selling out shows in 8 different countries around the world, UnderOATH is back on American soil to do similar. The ‘American Siege Tour’ (covering 34 dates nationwide) is being supported by two of the biggest alternative/hardcore bands out there right now, Saosin (who just released a new full length on Capital Records) and The Devil Wears Prada (whom this week had the major re-release of their sophomore success, Plagues). Only about two weeks into the tour many of the dates thus far have been selling out.

Terminal 5 in New York City, which has a capacity of 3,000, hosted one of the stops on the tour. Even though the show was on a Sunday night and school was being anticipated the next day, kids came out and brought illuminating energy.

Spencer’s vocals throughout the entire set were memorizing. His intense screams boosted by his melodic singing parts gave their live performance such depth. Every aspect of the instrumentals are tight enough to make the sounds cohesive yet loose enough to make the music full. UnderOATH’s performance is well rounded and jaw dropping but it’s the gall they put behind the delivery that makes the walls around you shake.

At one point in their set Spencer’s mic cut out and what were we left with? Those lucky enough to be standing up against the barrier and close to the stage were able to hear his voice in the raw, never once did he let up or draw attention to the fact that there was some equipment failure. Some of those kids that got to experience it passed by me as they were walking out. I could see them grabbing the sides of their heads and blinking heavily as if they had seen a ghost, they described Spencer in those few moments as “God-like” and “one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen in my life.”

UnderOath give’s kids a hardcore/rock concert they will not soon forget.

POS, a ‘hip-hopper’ out of Minnesota, was such a cool way kick off a night of hardcore rock. He is a one-man show, do not underestimate him just because he doesn’t travel with a posse (but now he has the support and friendship of the rockers on this tour), he brings it to the stage and draws the crowd in with his REAL lyrics and catchy beats. “Planet Verge’s Warped Tour Band of the Year,” The Devil Wears Prada is also an opener on this tour. They have been drawing out a solid crowd every night of the tour and have been selling mountains of merchandise, which you will be seeing on the streets any minute now. The Devil Wears Prada’s live performance is full of life and has matured and grown since their summer on Warped Tour. In between Warped Tour and now they took some time to write and refine themselves as musicians, it shows instrumentally, vocally, and is evident through the performance of a brand new song. They are one of the strongest bands in the genre today. There impact is immeasurable and their music is fast becoming an IPod essential. Spring 2009 has been slated for the release of their next studio album. Keep your eyes and your ears open.

For the past two years Saosin has been riding the train of success generated by their self-entitled album, they came to this tour with a newly released LP and a rejuvenated and awe-inspiring performance. Lead singer, Cover Reber, has such a versatile vocal range. He is able to achieve deep guttural screams and then sing with a crisp and unique tone capable of giving anyone goose bumps. While there old songs were the obvious crowd favorite, their new ones were greeted with open arms and given positive feed back.

This tour, without a doubt, is one of the most talent packed we will see over the next year. Each band is linked together by their alternative roots yet each band has their own interpretation and creative take on the music making art form. The entire concert was like reading a book, each band a chapter and each song kept you wanting to read more.
